This supermarket has a vast selection of reasonably priced groceries. Also has a great cooking utensils section with fair prices. (For example, I paid $5 for a nice professional looking apron with pockets.) Great everyday prices for seafood, such as fresh salmon or medium tiger shrimp at $6 per pound. Great products from different countries: China, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesian, Malaysia, etc.
Uwajimaya 10500 Southwest Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway Beaverton, OR 97005-3111 (503) 643-4512
This Japanese grocery naturally features the best selection for Japanese products, but also carries products from China and Southeast Asian countries like Thailand. They also have a very good choice of top quality knives like the rare to find MAC brand, a great selection of kimonos, plus many Japanese kitchen wares. The seafood and meat department are huge and offer fine quality products such as very fresh seafood (much of it sushi quality) and great selection of pre-sliced thin-cut meats for sukiyaki, yakiniku, shabu-shabu, and Korean BBQ (i.e., bulgogi and kalbi). Great quality produce, including many products used for Southeast Asian cuisine such as galangal and lemongrass. Prices are often on the high side compared to other Asian markets. But the good sake selection is reasonable.
H-Mart 13600 SW Pacific Highway Tigard, OR 97223 (503) 620-6120
This is a large Korean-style market with great selections of fresh seafood, meat, and vegetables as well as kitchenware, a hot deli section, a bakery, small eateries (e.g., sushi and noodles), and a Korean pickle bar. Good prices on large sake (typically at $6/bottle), scallions or cilantro (30¢ per bunch), and a head of lettuce for under a dollar. Great prices and a wide selection of mushrooms like king oyster, inoki, and shitake. Most products cater to ethnic Koreans, but there’s a strong presence of Japanese, Chinese, and some Southeast Asian products. H-Mart has the best selection of Korean BBQ meat types and cuts, sushi quality fish cheaper than Uwajimaya, and great prices for tofu and pickles.
This medium size store offers a great selection of Middle Eastern and East Indian products. A butcher section offers halal meat and custom orders. Great selection of a wide variety of spices at very good prices. In addition to olives, olive oil, and humus there’s also a deli to buy pre-cooked Lebanese kabobs, Indian samosas, and Saudi Arabian medjol dates (my favorite).
Pastaworks 3735 SE Hawthorne Boulevard Portland, OR 97214 (503) 232-1010
A gourmet grocery store featuring not only the top quality Mediterranean fare for which it is known (lovely cheeses, fresh bread, and fine quality produce) but also Southeast Asian ingredients such as organic galangal and ginger. This is really a fun and aesthetically pleasing European style store with amazingly attractive products. There are three Portland area locations: Hawthorne, Northwest, and Mississippi.
